In the second instalment of this series of Short Story Masterclass podcasts, Jac Cattaneo talks with award-winning author Kevin Barry about the short story’s lack of room for maneuver, the timing and rhythm of stories, mystery in your writing, feeling and sentimentality, and the relationship of memory to imagination.

Kevin Barry was born in Ireland in 1969. His first short story collection, There Are Little Kingdoms, was awarded the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature in 2007, while his second collection, Dark Lies the Island, won the Edge Hill University Short Story Prize in 2013. In 2012, Barry won the prestigious Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award, for ‘Beer Trip to Llandudno’. His debut novel, City of Bohane, was shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award and the Irish Book Award, and won the Author’s Club First Novel Prize and the IMPAC Prize, amongst others. Barry’s latest novel, Beatlebone, won the Goldsmith’s Prize in 2015.
