Since then she has published three further collections and four novels, and has won numerous awards for her work, including the Scottish Arts Council Book of the Year Award and the Whitbread Novel Award. Smith is known for combining striking ideas and observations with a tongue-in-cheek style, encouraging playful thoughtfulness in her readers.
